ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of 0.2% Chlorhexidine gluconate mouth wash and vitamin B-complex on minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis with respect to reduction in duration of ulcer, recurrence of ulcers and to increase the gap between ulcer free days during a specific period. A single blind therapeutic trail was carried out on 96 minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis patients which were divided into four groups. Group I was given 0.2% Chlorhexidine gluconate mouth wash, Group II received vitamin B-complex, Group III was given both. [I+II], and Group IV received placebo. Results showed reduction in ulcer duration, recurrence of ulcers and ulcer free days were increased. The clinical results of this study were promising and suggested that further investigation should be done with large study groups

ABSTRACT

This study was undertaken to investigate the outcome of traumatic intracapsular neck of femur fractures treated with total hip arthroplasty (THA). Patients aged ? 60 years who underwent THA for traumatic intracapsular neck of femur fractures from January 2005 to March 2009 were included in the study. Telephone or personal interviews were conducted. There were 49 patients identified within the study period. The mean age was 74.12 years. Most patients were females (81.6%), with a male: female ratio of 1: 4.4. In total, 29 patients were available for outcome scoring. The one-month mortality rate was 4.1%, and the one-year mortality rate was 20.5%. Of the 29 patients 82.8% obtained a Zukerman Functional Outcome Score of good (80 ?100) and 13.8% obtained a score of fair (60 ?80). THA for the treatment of traumatic neck of femur fractures in elderly is a good option with 96.6% of patients obtaining a satisfactory functional outcome, with acceptable morbidity and mortality statistics.

ABSTRACT

A 60-year-old male developed a hepatitis-like syndrome following co-amoxiclav therapy for respiratory infection. Non-specific hepatitis was considered as a diagnosis. A similar attack occurred 2 months later on the third day of co-amoxiclav therapy administered for recurrent respiratory infection. On discontinuation of the treatment, recovery was prompt and complete, with liver enzymes dropping to normal levels. This case illustrates the possibility of a hypersensitivity reaction to co-amoxiclav when the patient was rechallenged. The recent literature documenting hepatic side-effects associated with co-amoxiclav is reviewed
